Alternative fuels – SMMT looks to the future

26 September 2001 #SMMT News

SMMT today announced the first findings from a new motor industry group creating a vision for the fuels which will power the next generation of vehicles. A new publication called Towards a Shared Vision – Future Fuels and Sustainable Mobility shows the work being carried out by the SMMT Future Fuels Strategy Group (FFSG).

The need for sustainable energy sources and drive to cut vehicle CO2 emissions are the key factors in the development of future fuels. Through its work, the FFSG will advise on available options and share a long-term view with policy makers in government. This pro-active approach will ensure that government will be best placed to promote the most appropriate fuels and support the UK as a world leader in cleaner vehicle technologies.

Towards a Shared Vision – Future Fuels and Sustainable Mobility focuses on the aims of the FFSG and the investment already made in greener alternatives like hydrogen fuel cells, liquid petroleum gas vehicles and electric / petrol hybrid cars. Copies can be found on SMMT’s web site at www.smmt.co.uk

SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan commented, ‘The Future Fuels Strategy Group’s aim is to develop a vision for the future and to bring the alternative fuels debate to as wide an audience as possible. Everyone has to understand the practical issues and policy decisions that underpin the success of future fuel and vehicle development in the UK. What better place to launch the group than at this week’s Driving the Future conference?’

SMMT will be at the Driving the Future event from 26 September to 28 September at Millbrook Proving Ground in Bedfordshire.
