Jubilee June takes silver in new car market league
- Second highest June on record, as new car market hits 207,330 units
- Year to date sales reached 1,347,693 units, 6.2 per cent up on last year
- June 2002 registrations 3.7 per cent down on best-ever June 2001
- Private buyer demand rose by 7.6 per cent in the first six months of 2002
Commenting on June’s results, Christopher Macgowan, SMMT Chief Executive, said,
‘With an extended three day Jubilee holiday and World Cup fever gripping Britain,
no-one expected the new car market to match last year’s record June total. However,
the fact that the figures are the second best since records began is extremely
encouraging. It means that during all the celebrations, people were out buying
new cars in droves, from franchised dealers, adding an estimated £2.7 billion
to the economy.’
