The motor industry today welcomed the renewal of the European
block exemption regulation. This is an indication that the European Commission
recognises that the new car market requires special rules to protect consumers.
The UK is the second largest new car market in Europe, and
last year enjoyed record figures for new car sales. Consumer confidence in UK
dealers and the current system has continued into 2002, and SMMT expect total
sales for this year to reach 2.4 million, the second highest on record.
Motor manufacturers will now work within this new framework
to ensure that there continues to be a competitive marketplace serving consumers.
