The 2002 British International Motor Show, in association with the Daily Telegraph, promises to be a fun-filled, half-term treat for all the family. Visitors to the NEC in October can expect more than just glitzy cars to keep them entertained at this year’s event.
Peugeot will be hosting their biggest stand to date, decked out like a mini shopping mall, complete with street entertainers and an exclusively choreographed dance troop performing each day.
For the budding artist in the family, Daihatsu’s Paint Box will be the place to be. Youngsters will have the chance to show off their creative skills by painting a range of Daihatsu cars in whatever style they like.
And if it’s a bit of pampering you’re after, drop the kids off at the Nissan sponsored playcare centre and pop into The Sanctuary. The healthy-lifestyle relaxation zone will host salad and juice bars and offer massages to relax you after the excitement of the Show.
Responding to the recent growth in family-car sales, Vauxhall’s new Meriva, billed as a compact car with MPV versatility, will make its UK debut. The new Renault Espace and Peugeot 807 people-carrier will also be making their first UK appearance alongside some of the industry’s sexiest numbers.
You can also get in on some early Motor Show action by filling your car up at participating Shell garages for the chance to win your dream car. Every time a customer fills up with Shell Optimax Unleaded, they will be given a pack of six special Motor Show Top Trumps cards. Whoever collects all 18 will pick their star prize from the 700 cars on show, up to the value of £50,000.

- The British International Motor Show 2002 takes place from 23 October to 3 November at Birmingham’s NEC with public access from 24 October. Discount tickets for the Show are now on sale for those who book in advance through the web site at www.motorshow.co.uk Visitors can save £3 by booking on-line, with adult tickets priced at £12 for public days. On the door, tickets are priced at £15. For the Daily Telegraph preview day on 24 October, tickets cost £25 in advance but £40 on the door, an on-line saving of more than a third. All discounts are available until midnight on Sunday 13 October, when tickets revert to normal on-the-door prices.
- For visitors without access to the Internet, tickets are available through the Motor Show box office ticket line on 0870 906 2002. Lines are open 9am – 8pm on weekdays and 10am – 8pm at the weekend.
- During the Show, doors will open from 9.30am to 7pm on all public days, closing at 5pm on the final day.
- The number of MPVs registered in the UK has risen dramatically in recent years. In 2000, 59,987 units were registered, a figure which rose to 79,922 in 2001. In the first six months of this year, 46,271 MPVs were registered in the UK.
- Motor Show Top Trumps cards will be available to those buying Shell Optimax fuel from participating Shell garages until 3 September 2002. Winners, who collect all 18 individual cards, can choose one car up to the value of £50,000 at the 2002 British International Motor Show.
