- January to September new car market rose 5.1 per cent to 2,063,236 units
- Diesel car sales soared 24.4 per cent to 99,601 units in September
- September new car market dipped 2.4 per cent, from 443,265 to 432,661 units
Commenting on the figures, SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan said, ‘ New car sales have been strong throughout 2002 and last month was no exception. September’s market came close to matching last year’s record total which means we are well on course to smash the 2001 year-end record. The UK has now firmly established itself as the second largest car market in Europe, with 2002 on course to break the 2.5 million mark for the first time.’
