SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan said, ‘At the beginning of 2002, not many in the industry would have predicted a second successive record year for new car sales. But throughout the year, the market has remained strong and is set to smash the 2.5 million barrier for the first time.’
He added, ‘Sales have cooled a little over the last couple of months in line with industry expectations. However, more new cars have been sold over the first 11 months of 2002 than are normally sold in an entire year.’
