04 July 2003 #Cars #Registrations #SMMT News

  • June new car market up 15.8 per cent to 240,174 units
  • Private registrations showed their best performance of 2003, up 16.1 per cent
  • Diesel market up 31.6 per cent to 62,866 units

  • Commenting on the new car registrations data, SMMT chief executive Christopher Macgowan said, ‘In a month which saw independent sources position UK car prices as the second lowest in Europe, it is great to see such a strong June total. New car registrations beat all expectations as private buyers took advantage of a fiercely competitive market and the fantastic offers which are currently available in UK showrooms.’

    Notes to editors

    2. Diesel penetration is expected to reach 29 per cent of overall sales in 2003, or 710,000 units. In 2002 the diesel market share reached 23.5 per cent or 602,623 units, with 2001 at 436,591 units or 17.8 per cent market share.
