‘These figures are great news,’ said Christopher Macgowan, SMMT chief executive. ‘But beneath the froth there are some mixed messages. Many of these trucks were sold before the end of last year, with a typical sale-to-registration time lag; so this autumn’s truck registration figures may show the effects of an election-based wobble in business and consumer confidence this spring. By contrast, van registrations continue to ride high on the back of a buoyant construction industry.’
