Due in part to the UK scrappage incentive scheme, car retailer Arnold Clark is to create 700 new jobs across the UK.
The positions, spread out between Scotland and England, range from sales and apprentice places to supporting roles. The family-run company has an annual turnover of more than £2bn. The business, which recently subscribed to the Motor Industry Code of Practice for Service and Repair, plans to develop a new site in Huddersfield, set to open in October.
SMMT chief executive Paul Everitt said, “This is good news for the industry. Since the beginning of the economic downturn, the automotive industry has adapted to the challenging conditions affecting global markets.”
“The support government has delivered via the scrappage scheme has proven beneficial to the industry which employs over 800,000 people in the UK. To ensure future growth and to continue research and development, government must now help to deliver support through the Automotive Assistance Programme.”
