The Royal Automobile Club Foundation today held a debate to delve into the challenge of lowering car CO2 emissions. The event focused principally on whether electric vehicles or refinements to existing technology are the way forward as the automotive industry seeks to lower carbon even further. The high level issues were addressed by a collection of experts including What Car? editor Steve Fowler, Committee on Climate Change chief executive, David Kennedy and environment editor of The Times, Ben Webster.

SMMT recently released its New Car CO2 Report 2010, showing that average new car CO2 emissions fell by their biggest ever margin in 2009, dropping 5.4% from the previous year as improved technology and the Scrappage Incentive Scheme impacted the market. The publication of this report provides a full analysis of these figures, demonstrating the sector’s transparency in meeting the low carbon challenge.
