Chevrolet Volt charges into SMMT exhibition space

01 September 2011 #SMMT News

The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders’ (SMMT) has welcomed the first car into its modern exhibition space in the heart of Westminster. The Chevrolet Volt arrived this morning, driving into the showroom-style area in electric-only mode.

SMMT’s new office is the London heart of the UK motor industry frequently hosting ministers, government officials, senior industry executives, media and stakeholders for a variety of meetings and events. The reception exhibition space provides a unique opportunity to highlight the breadth and scale of the modern UK automotive industry to visitors and passers-by in a prime, central London location.

The Volt’s electric drivetrain – known as E-REV (Extended-Range Electric Vehicle) – directly powers the car’s wheels. The petrol engine generates power to the battery, giving the car a maximum range of up to 400 miles, and 60 miles in electric-only mode. The Volt goes on sale in the UK in March next year, and is eligible for the full £5,000 from the government’s plug-in car grant.

The technology present in the Volt has won the car multiple awards in the USA, where it was crowned North American Car of the Year, as well as winning recognition from titles such as Motor Trend and Automobile Magazine.

The exhibition space at SMMT can hold up to two vehicles with or without additional smaller exhibits (engines, design canvases, drivetrains, chassis, technology demonstrators, simulators etc) and is reserved solely for the use of SMMT members.

SMMT has published the Electric Car Guide to help motorists make more informed decisions when purchasing an EV. Presented in an easy to understand Q&A-style format, the free publication addresses some of the common queries relating to electric vehicles including information about batteries, charging, vehicle performance, on-the-road costs, government incentives and safety.
