Nissan Sunderland Plant held its fifth Schools’ Engineering Discovery Event in 2012, created to inspire the 11-13 age group and encourage them to consider engineering as a future career.
The annual event has welcomed over 12,500 local schoolchildren to the plant since 2008, where they have enjoyed a production line tour, taken part in engineering-themed games, and worked in teams to answer a quiz.
Nissan graduate engineers hosted each event; explaining how engineering is connected to everything around us – from computer games and mobile phones, to space exploration and Roman wall building. Pupils learned that as the world constantly adapts and evolves so too does an engineer: Nissan engineers have learned about electric vehicle technology and have prepared the plant ready to build a 100% electric car, the Nissan LEAF.
