23 July 2013 #SMMT News

With vehicle and engine plants in the UK, Toyota is a major force in UK automotive manufacturing and is showcasing the diversity of its model line-up in a two-week-long exhibition at SMMT’s Westminster headquarters. The exhibition includes the best-selling Auris Hybrid, and the high-performance GT86 sports car.

Produced in Toyota’s Burnaston plant, the Toyota Auris hybrid is the UK’s most popular C-segment hybrid vehicle, with a share of more than 17% in the hybrid car market. The Auris employs a full hybrid system, mating a 1.8 litre VVT-i petrol engine and electric motor to yield a combined power output of 134bhp and emit just 84g/km CO2. It also offers drivers the option of driving short distances in full-electric mode.

Toyota’s Burnaston manufacturing facility, which builds both the Auris and Avensis is one of the most productive in the UK. The start of second-generation Auris’ production involved £185 million investment and the recruitment of an additional 800 employees.

Toyota’s other exhibit, GT86, showcases an entirely different aspect of the manufacturer’s engineering capability. A focused driving-machine, the GT86 is engineered to deliver an experience similar to that of a high-performance classic car, while retaining Toyota’s renowned environmental performance both in the production and use of the vehicle.

Toyota has been one of the driving forces of UK automotive production since it established its plant in Derbyshire in1989, its continuing commitment to our country is shown through the levels of investment it makes and the number of workers it employs. Its innovative and exciting products continue to capture motorists’ imaginations, making it one of the UK’s best-selling brands.
