To celebrate the arrival of the new 63-plate, SMMT has curated an exhibition at its Westminster headquarters, showcasing a number of the UK’s best-selling new cars of 2013 so far. The Ford Fiesta, Vauxhall Corsa and Nissan Qashqai included in the exhibition all occupy a top 10 position in the 2013 new car sales league table.
The introduction of the new ’63’ registration is expected to continue the success seen by the 13-plate so far this year. Since March, 1,115,459 cars have been registered on a 13-plate, outselling the past nine registration plates. This reflects the continuing strength of the UK new car market, which has grown for 17 consecutive months.
It is expected that approximately 390,000 new cars will be sold in September, when the 63-plate first comes into use. This equates to a spend of approximately £6 billion by motorists in the first 30 days of the plate’s term.
Featured in SMMT’s exhibit to celebrate the introduction of the 63-plate is the UK’s best selling car, the Ford Fiesta, with 72,129 units registered from January to July 2013. Also included in the exhibit is the Fiesta’s closest class-rival and third-best-selling car overall, the Vauxhall Corsa, which registered 51,135 in the first seven months of the year.
The UK’s most popular crossover, the Nissan Qashqai, with 31,424 units registered, completes the exhibition.
