SMMT exhibition puts the spotlight on UK automotive pioneers

In just over a week’s time, the winner of the UK’s most prestigious prize for automotive innovation will be revealed – and from today, visitors to SMMT’s Westminster office can see for themselves the pioneering submissions fighting it out for the top prize.

Over the next two weeks, the company’s exhibition space will play host to exciting displays from the six contenders for the SMMT Award for Automotive Innovation 2013. Now in its fourth year, the Award highlights the UK’s leading capability for groundbreaking design, R&D and engineering on a global scale.

After a rigorous judging process involving leading industry figures, one of the innovations below will be crowned the winner at SMMT’s Annual Dinner on 26 November – but which one? Come back to the website then to find out…


In contention for the SMMT Award for Automotive Innovation 2013 are:

  • Ford Motor Company: 1.0 Ecoboost engine

Big-engine performance and 65mpg, all from a 1.0-litre, three-cylinder powerplant.

  • McLaren Automotive: McLaren P1

The most advanced combination of motorsport technologies ever brought together on a road car.

  • Productiv Ltd and Tata Steel: The Proving Factory

A pioneering manufacturing initiative to bridge the ‘Valley of Death’ between R&D and production.

A lightweight but powerful electric motor, already featured in the Jaguar C-X75 supercar concept.
