Commercial vehicle registrations grew by 11.4% in March with vans driving the numbers forward, according to the latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders.

A total of 54,232 vehicles were registered with the new number plate in March, 50,064 of them vans.

Year-to-date vans are also up by 16% to 79,917, numbers which help to bring total commercial vehicle registrations up by 10.8% so far this year at 87,491.

The new Euro-6 emissions regulations continue to have an impact on truck registrations, although March was only 16.5% down compared with a 27% drop in February and 37% slump in January.

“The new 14-plate drove van numbers up, pushing the overall commercial vehicle market 11.4% ahead of 2013 to more than 54,000 units,” said Mike Hawes SMMT Chief Executive.

“Registration plate changes always prove popular with van buyers, so March and September numbers are typically more than double the average month, a trend continued this March as volumes rose 14.6% to above 50,000 units.

“Truck demand remained subdued as the influence of Euro-6 legislation continues to be felt across the sector, but the level of impact has lessened steadily since January and should be minimal by mid-year.”

Ford is firmly in the market leader spot and celebrated its highest volume of registrations since 2008 in March. The Transit and Transit Custom are the number one and two best-selling vans for March and the first quarter of 2014 as a whole.
