The DVLA is preparing the way for the end of the paper tax disc on 1 October this year.

Digital records mean the paper tax disc will no longer need to be displayed and this brings some other changes in how vehicle excise duty is handled.

Owners and operators will still receive VED reminders, but it will no longer be possible to transfer tax when vehicles change hands.

The seller of a vehicle will get an automatic refund on any outstanding time on the tax, while the new owner will have to arrange for it to be paid.

This can be done with the New Keeper Supplement of the V5 registration certificate, or online or by phone 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Refunds on tax will also be automatically issued when the DVLA is notified that a vehicle has been scrapped, stolen, exported or declared off road.
