News from Volvo: Muckaway specialist West Coast Haulage Deliveries has ordered 16 Euro-6 compliant Volvo FMX 8×4 tippers, and are the first Volvos the company has operated.
All 16 of the new series construction trucks were supplied by Truck and Bus Wales & West at Pontypridd and will all be maintained on a three-year Repair and Maintenance contract there.
Based at Ystrad Mynach in South Wales, West Coast Haulage operates 30 trucks. The 16 new series Volvo FMX Euro-6 trucks are replacements for non-Volvo vehicles. Deliveries of the new trucks began recently and all 16 are scheduled to be in service by July.
The day cab FMX eight-wheelers are powered by Volvo’s D13K-420, 13-litre engine rated at 420hp. It delivers 2,100Nm max torque between 860 and 1400rpm, and West Coast Haulage specified it with Volvo’s VEB+ engine brake for maximum retardation. The automated gearbox is the latest version of the i-Shift generation and features distribution and construction software.
“The FMX is a proper muckaway truck,” says Pat Sexton, Director of West Coast Haulage says, “Ground clearance is very good from all angles, there’s a good bumper and we like the front towing eye, which is mounted direct to the front of the chassis frame.”
Bodywork is by Thompsons and Edbro TS Series twin-cylinder, underfloor tipping hoists are fitted. According to Sexton, the new FMXs will stay in service for between three and four years, to attract optimum resale value.
