News from Roadways: With an average of ten children or young people being seriously injured or killed every day in the UK through road accidents, Roadways Container Logistics has launched its pioneering ‘Rory’ Road Safety campaign, to help raise awareness of road safety around large goods vehicles.

‘Rory’, Roadways’ bespoke 44 tonne container vehicle visits schools with his road safety programme, developed specifically to teach primary school children about the potential hazards of being in close proximity to a large goods vehicle.

During ‘Rory’s’ visit, pupils learn all about braking distances, drivers’ mirror blind spots and danger zones for both pedestrians and cyclists;  as well as being involved in a range of interactive safety-based activities.  Pupils also have the opportunity to sit with the driver in his cab and learn more about the truck’s systems, as well as life as an LGV driver.

In 2012 the Government was criticised for the first increase in road deaths for nearly a decade, with the largest increase amongst pedestrians where the number of deaths rose by 12%.

Marc Wynne, General Manager at Roadways Container Logistics says, “As an industry leader we have a role to play in helping to reduce road accidents. ‘Rory’ road safety training will, we hope, play a significant part in helping to reduce injuries and fatalities in school age children.

“Feedback from schools ‘Rory’ has visited to-date has been really positive, with teachers citing the training as invaluable to pupils and staff alike, and having the potential to save a life.”
