News from Cartwright: Cartwright has further strengthened its senior management team with the key appointment of Lionel Curtis as the company’s new Technical Director.

Curtis, who joins the company from a competitor trailer manufacturer, brings a wealth of experience to this newly created post at Cartwright. He has spent the past five and a half years in the trailer sector and has been involved in large commercial vehicles, trucks, buses and earth moving equipment for 23 years, encompassing a broad experience across all types of larger vehicles as well as trailers.

His career started in the motor industry in 1989, working on hybrid and electric vehicles.  In his more recent role in Scotland he spent much of his time involved in refrigerated trailers, including insulated panels, lifting decks and double decks.  Lionel is a graduate of the Royal Military College of Science and has a Cranfield engineering degree. He served his apprenticeship as a toolmaker and went on to work through the design offices prior to studying for his degree.

Curtis said, “I am joining Cartwright at an exciting time for the company. It is a major opportunity for me to bring all my experience from the various types of vehicles and industries I have worked on for the benefit of Cartwright.

“I want to bring leadership in the technical function and help to develop the staff here. We have some very experienced people in the engineering team and I want us to be considered the engineering team of choice for our customers.

“I want customers to come to Cartwright because they get the best designs and that is where I believe we can go and where I want to take us,” he added.

Curtis is Chairman of the SMMT Trailer and Bodywork Technical Committee, a post he took on earlier this year after being nominated by his peers in the sector.  He is also a Fellow of the IMechE.

Mark Cartwright, Group Managing Director of Cartwright, commented, “We are delighted that Lionel has joined us as he is an important senior appointment and brings a great deal of experience and expertise to his new role in the company.  The fact he has relocated so far to join us shows great faith in Cartwright.

“We are confident he will make a significant contribution to developing our people and products in our technical function particularly in the refrigerated area where he has personally built a strong reputation.”
