Global logistics firm UPS has ordered a fleet of new long wheelbase Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 513 BlueTec models with 95kW Euro-6 engine, replacing the existing Vario in its fleet.
The new models will go on the road in the UK, Ireland and Germany in the summer after a year-long test. Three models will be produced in co-operation with Spier – the P60, P70 and P80 – each with different body lengths.
The new Sprinter 513 BlueTec, with a maximum weight of 5.3-tonnes, was chosen due to its reduced fuel consumption, lower CO2 emissions and high capacity: the UPS P70 can carry up to 2,300kg.
Ergonomics and safety were important factors in the development of the new vehicle. For example, the passenger-side sliding door has a maximum clearance of 2,075mm by 840mm – higher and wider than its predecessor. The model also has bigger windows for greater visibility and the load compartment has a slip-proof surface.
The new Sprinter will come with Crosswind Assist, which detects lateral wind forces and selectively brakes individual wheels where necessary, preventing the vehicle from yawing.
