A Gloucestershire-based firm has developed a vehicle safety modification system to reduce the number of road incidents involving cyclists and heavy goods vehicles.

Family-run Sentinel Systems’ Bike Hotspot technology consists of four key elements: a front corner system, a side scan system, a side camera and an external sounder.

The external scanning sensors are fitted along the nearside of the vehicle as well as the front corner and are linked to an internal audio warning to alert the driver of potential hazards.<http://youtu.be/KvqnBOw92OY>

The technology, which won the Product Innovation award at the 2013 Safety and Health Exhibition, could help reduce accidents with cyclists – a major focus of Mayor of London Boris Johnson, who is spearheading the Safer HGV Zone which comes into effect in September.

As of 1 September, vehicles of more than 3.5 tonnes must fit side-guards and Class V and Class VI close-proximity mirrors or face exclusion from the capital’s roads.
