The bus and coach market experienced its strongest start to a year since 2008 in January as registrations shot up by 48.6% to 715 units.
A 90.4% rise in purpose-built buses was the driving factor behind the boom after the completion of several large orders.
The converted bus market also saw significant growth, with a 42.6% increase in the month.
“January’s increase in bus and coach registrations is good news for the sector,” said SMMT Chief Executive Mike Hawes. However, given the variable nature of demand in this market, one month of growth, while encouraging, should be viewed cautiously.”
