Purpose of the Post:
- To monitor, analyse, report and advise on economic, fiscal and market developments affecting the automotive industry in the UK and globally
- To develop robust data sets, economic intelligence, analysis and arguments that inform SMMT policy positions, communication and member services on all key automotive issues within the economic, industrial and taxation agenda
- To engage and represent SMMT’s views to members, SMMT colleagues, government, and other stakeholders as required through input to meetings, reports and other projects and services.
- To lead on any SMMT projects and activities related to economic, fiscal and industrial policy issues, positions and reports as required
Qualifications/Skills/Attributes required:
- Economics or business degree (2:1 or equivalent), post-graduate degree is desirable
- Proven professional experience in a business (automotive, industry or relevant service sector), or a government, trade association or research environment
- Experience of applied economics and research, familiar with key sources of economic intelligence
- Experience in economic policy work and ability to write and present policy-influencing documents, positions and reports is highly desirable
- Strong numerical, analytical and reporting skills, competent in analytical methods relevant to post
- Competent in the use of ICT, competent in data capture and management
- Good awareness of the commercial, regulatory and political issues affecting businesses in the UK
- Highly motivated team player, able to work independently and in teams, with the drive to take responsibility, think strategically and deliver to tight deadlines
- Excellent communications skills (oral/written), effective and comfortable in communicating and presenting technical detail in a concise and credible manner
- Excellent interpersonal skills and diplomacy, able to develop good working relationships with colleagues, members, government and key stakeholders
- Enthusiastic in applying him-/herself to diverse range of issues in support of SMMT business needs
- An on-going orientation to learning and using initiative in developing and applying job skills
- Able and willing to travel in the UK and abroad to attend meetings and other events
Main duties include:
- Economic monitoring and evidence
- To regularly research and analyse key economic, sector and transport data and statistics
- To monitor, evaluate and brief on key research reports on the economic agendas
- To maintain appropriate data management processes (data capture, reporting & analysis)
- To support strategic development of SMMT economic data sets and their use
- Regular data reporting
- To provide data and analytical input to SMMT policy development and political communication
- To support SMMT’s monthly data reporting releases on UK vehicle markets
- To provide quarterly economic and market briefings to SMMT committees and working groups
- To develop economic content for SMMT’s media engagement, website and publications
- Economic analysis and political engagement
- To provide economic analysis, intelligence and written input to support SMMT’s political agenda
- To manage regular and ad-hoc survey projects, develop evidence and write briefing papers
- To represent SMMT economics agenda at internal and key external stakeholder fora and events
- To brief staff, members, government and other stakeholders on key issues and analysis
- To respond to internal/external requests for data/analysis in an appropriate and timely manner
- To develop and lead on projects and influential relationships as required
- Research, reports and surveys
- To research, develop and contribute economic analysis to key SMMT reports and projects
- To support SMMT input into Automotive Council, specifically the International Competitiveness and Business Environment agenda and projects
- To support strategic development of SMMT’s portfolio of economic outputs
Salary and benefits package:
