European demand for new commercial vehicles increased by 16.4% in May, with 187,134 CVs registered in the month. The increase occurred across all segments of the commercial vehicle market and Italy, France and Spain all experienced double-digit growth.

Almost one million new commercial vehicles were registered in the region during the first five months of 2016, putting the EU market’s expansion at 13.5 percentage points during 2016.

The new heavy commercial vehicle market (over 16 tonnes) and the new heavy and medium heavy commercial vehicle market (over 3.5 tonnes) performed similarly well, with both categories seeing strong growth in four of the five major European economies. Registrations in Germany remained relatively stable. For the 33rd consecutive month, light commercial vehicle registrations also increased in May.

Registrations of new medium and heavy buses and coaches were 2.6% higher in May, compared with the same month last year, with the segment’s growth for the year to date reaching 3.3%.
