British-built engine demand holds up in 2017 despite June fall

27 July 2017 #UK Manufacturing
  • Engine manufacturing remains robust year-to-date, with demand up 3.6% overall in the first half-year.
  • Performance of UK and overseas markets more closely aligned after exports drop -3.2% in the month, compared with a smaller -0.9% fall at home.
  • June only the second month in 2017 to see a decline in year-on-year output.

Mike Hawes, SMMT Chief Executive, said,

Overall, UK engine manufacturing continues to build on the success of last year, delivering on the investment it has received. Consistently, more than half of all engines produced in Britain are exported so manufacturers will watch closely as Britain seeks agreement on both the rules and the cost of doing business with partners in the EU and globally. We need urgent clarity on the terms of trade to ensure these factories maintain their international competitiveness in years to come.
