Logistics operator CM Downton has introduced a dedicated driver training vehicle to its fleet to help recruit new drivers and boost the skills of existing staff.
The DAF truck has been specially converted with an additional passenger seat so that an observer can join the trainee driver and instructor in the cab to offer additional assessment and guidance. Located at Downton’s recently announced 282,000 square feet warehouse in Chepstow, it comes as the firm looks to further expand, increasing its team to 250 employees, recruiting up to 100 new drivers.
As well as training new recruits, the vehicle will assist current drivers during license upgrades from Class C to C+E. Some of Downton’s 800 drivers are unable to drive the largest vehicles but the company’s Driver Trainer, Andy Heaven, has been completing the qualifications to provide the additional training to staff requiring an upgrade.
Andy Downton, Managing Director at CM Downton, said: “Having our own vehicle will significantly increase our ability to recruit and train new drivers quickly and to our own high standards without relying on external service providers. We also recognise that helping members of our existing team to achieve the higher license is good for their careers and gives us greater flexibility.”
