Iveco has entered a partnership with the state-owned Paris transport operator RATP (Régie Autonome des Transports Parisiens) for the supply of up to 200 CNG-powered buses.
The collaboration, initially planned to run between 2017 and 2021, will see the Iveco Urbanway Natural Power buses equipped to run on compressed natural gas and biomethane in the French capital. Iveco currently has over 6,000 CNG buses in operation across Europe.
The fuel technology was chosen by RATP for its advantages in terms of environmental impact and cost, with the Natural Power technology offering improved air quality, low noise levels and a neutral carbon footprint.
Other major cities which have already adopted gas-powered public transit fleets include Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan; Bari in southern Italy; Brno, the second largest city in the Czech Republic; Girona in north-eastern Spain; Lille, Montpellier, Nantes and Valence, all in France.
