The National Refuse Championship is returning to Weston-super-Mare in 2018, after the first event held last year rasied over £12,000 for charity The Alzheimer’s Society.
Organised by Refuse Vehicle Solutions, the 2017 event saw more than 100 refuse vehicle drivers and loaders from all over the UK compete in a series of races designed to test their skills, and following the success and popularity of the first year RVS have decided to make it an annual event. Taking place on Friday 15th and Saturday 16th June in Weston-super-Mare, the event offers free entry to public spectators and promises something for all ages.
Spencer Law, Managing Director of RVS and Founder of the NRC: “I’ve wanted to create the National Refuse Championships for years, but it wouldn’t have been possible without the amazing support and generosity of friends, family, staff and the waste management industry. We are well underway with preparations for this year’s event, which is going to be bigger and better, and we hope to raise even more money for The Alzheimer’s Society.”
2017 winners Aylesbury Vale District Council are returning to defend their crown but are also entering a second all-female team. David Clark, Transport Manager, Aylesbury Vale District Council (AVDC): “Since winning the event last year there has been so much positivity across the crews and council departments, which is fantastic. It has been great for team-building. Our female crew members are keen to show that they can beat the men.”
29 crews have entered for the 2018 event, twice as many as the previous year, with headline sponsorship from specialist contract hire firm Indelease. Dennis Eagle are sponsoring a fundraising drinks reception on the Friday evening, while during the day there is an exhibition with seminars, presentations and product demonstrations.
