Tell us a bit about your business? When were you founded, where are you based and how many people do you employ? And what does the business do?

Vic Young (South Shields) Ltd was founded in the early 1970s.  As time progressed, the company became one of the most successful Nissan dealerships in the North of England and grew a solid reputation for its bespoke vehicle conversions.

Currently on site, we employ over 80 members of staff in our dedicated Conversions, Mobility, Sales, Vehicle Rental & Fleet, MOT & Servicing, Breakdown & Repair, Bodyshop and Valeting departments.  Each department has its own workshop or building with department manager and key employees. However, we also strongly believe in the training, development and support of all our employees. You will find several employees are multi-skilled across departments, which not only gives the company greater support but increases job satisfaction, value, worth and scope for future progression of each employee.

How is business? What’s the outlook for the year ahead?

We are investing in broadening our currently available range of all-electric vehicle conversions.   Presently, we offer a whole suite of Nissan e-NV200 Conversions, manufactured by our Conversions Team in order to assist local authorities and businesses switch to ultra low emission vehicles. (ULEV with encouragement from more and more city centres and local authorities switching to zero-emission vehicles and Clean Air Zone practices, we are experiencing high demand for vehicles from our current Electric Vehicle Suite which includes an e-Hackney taxi model, e-Boxvan, e-CrewCab, e-Dropside, e-Tipper and -CageTipper.

What are the big issues or technological advances that fill you with positivity?

The launch of more and more new base models of ULEVs from manufacturers will give us more scope for future conversions.  Our Research, Design and Innovation team is always working on new possibilities and monitoring the market.  With our proven track record of the highest quality vehicle conversions across most makes and manufacturers, we are looking to bolster our design catalogue and further our recognition as a “One-Stop Shop” for bespoke ULEV Conversions.

Part of our one-stop shop ethos is the fact that we can offer our customers support through the whole of their vehicle’s life, from MOT and servicing through to Breakdown and Repair all on our own site. We maintain our requisite high calibre of craftsmanship and customer service through this in-house training and employee development.

As we move forward we envisage the recruitment of more technicians and apprentices in our Conversions department and across the company.  We will be furthering the training for our current employees to enable them to work, repair and service any ULEVs that become available on the market with total confidence.
