Auto key to upcoming green revolution

22 April 2021 #Uncategorised

UK Automotive is constantly undergoing change, and the next one, the move from fossil fuels, is invariably described as ‘the biggest change since the invention of the horse and cart’. It seems that as each week passes we see another major announcement on either climate change and decarbonisation. This week we have both: the US President’s climate summit and the focus on the UK’s sixth Carbon Budget.

The former is probably more about political realignment and engagement, whereas the latter will see the CCC’s recommended target of reducing emissions by 78% by 2035 enshrined into law this June. As affirmed by the Prime Minister this week, tackling climate change relies on green innovation and new technologies. For our sector, this transition will be supported by a further few key announcements in the coming weeks and months: the government’s Transport Decarbonisation Plan, the launch of the HGV Consultation, and part two of the Diesel Bus End of Sale Consultation.

The upcoming COP26 conference will be an opportunity to seize this momentum and SMMT will have a presence to make sure the automotive industry continues to contribute to the conversation.
