A fleet of 36 zero-emission single-decker electric buses has been rolled out onto the roads of Cardiff.
Cardiff Bus has deployed its latest acquisition of Yutong E12 vehicles, featuring a 422kWh battery and 186 miles of range, and now account for 24% of its fleet.
It comes after the bus company, which also serves surrounding towns including Barry and Penarth, submitted a successful funding bid in partnership bid with shareholder Cardiff Council to the Department for Transport’s Ultra-Low Emissions Bus Scheme.
Paul Dyer, Managing Director at Cardiff Bus, said the move is significant for its goal of reaching zero emissions, with Cardiff Council aiming to become carbon neutral by 2030, and providing first-class customer service.
He said: “We take our role in improving the air quality in Cardiff very seriously and we know that this development is going to be instrumental in ensuring city life can continue in a more green and sustainable fashion.”
Councillor Caro Wild, Cardiff’s Cabinet Member for Strategic Planning and Transport, added: “It is great to see the new fleet of electric buses on the streets of Cardiff, and they will play an important part towards our clean air and carbon neutral ambitions for the city.
“These modern vehicles will significantly improve the customer experience and are great for the environment, as they produce zero exhaust emissions and reduce noise pollution as well.”
