Despite the myriad challenges facing the sector, May’s return to growth for engine production, reflecting increased vehicle manufacturing output, is very welcome. The sector, however, is still someway off a full recovery and rising business costs, alongside pandemic related headwinds such as supply chain shortages and fears of economic downturn, remain a major concern. Urgent action is required now to help mitigate rising costs, boost the UK’s competitiveness and safeguard automotive manufacturing on which so many livelihoods and jobs depend.
