First electric concrete mixer on the streets of London

29 June 2023 #Truck

The first electric-powered concrete mixer in London has been unveiled by Aggregate Industries (AI), marking the latest step in the supplier’s build towards a greener future and a wider shift in the construction sector.

The 26-tonne Renault Trucks E-Tech D Wide vehicle, customised by McPhee Mixers, will serve AI’s busy London Concrete arm, which manufactures and delivers essential ready-mix concrete materials round the capital.

The mixer will be used to supply the company’s ECOPact range of green concrete solutions – which offer up to 70% carbon reductions compared to standard (CEM1) concrete – and Dynamax, a more sustainable high-performance concrete that reduces material requirement.

It represents the second operational electric mixer truck in the UK, the first having entered operation with Tarmac in Birmingham last year.

The truck features a fully integrated and DVS compliant connected camera and safety system, which was developed and installed by Fleet Focus. It will have zero emissions and a battery life of up to 10 hours.

Kirstin McCarthy, Sustainability Director at Aggregate Industries, said: “As we look to the future, the global transition to EVs will play a central role in the world’s wider decarbonisation aims and is something which must happen in construction at pace.

“In this vein, this launch marks just the first start of our transformational journey to supply sustainable construction materials to customers via the greenest means possible.”
