The Aftermarket Section is one of SMMT’s largest and represents the independent sector for service and repair. Its membership of around 140 companies is drawn from parts manufacturers and suppliers, importers, distributors, workshops and data providers. All are members of the section with the interests of the independent aftermarket in mind rather than the franchised dealer network (the SMMT’s Car Section Aftersales Working Group represents this sector).
The Section’s main activities are:
- representing the sector’s interests to UK government
- informing and consulting its members on legislative developments affecting the aftermarket
- representing the independent aftermarket’s interests at EU level through membership of FIGIEFA and CLEPA
- providing technical and market information
The size of the Aftermarket Section prevents it from frequently meeting. Instead an Aftermarket Committee is elected by section members every two years and meets three times a year. The section then meets as a whole once a year. A number of specialist committees and activity groups keep the Committee informed of subjects on which the section’s members want it to take action.
